Our Sunday service is a Eucharist, also known as Holy Communion, The Lord’s Supper, and the Mass.
We gather each Sunday at 10:00 a.m. at our home on 2nd Street.
About our Sunday Service
The central characteristic of this service is the sharing of bread and wine, reflecting Jesus’ and his disciples “Last Supper” meal. The service goes by many names: The Lord’s Supper, Holy Communion, Eucharist, Mass. At. St. John’s we use “Eucharist,” a Greek word that means “We Give Thanks.”
The pattern is that we gather, hear the Word of God and respond to it through sermon and prayer, share in bread and wine, and ‘un-gather.’
In Eucharist we invoke God’s blessing on the bread and wine as a whole community gathered in worship.
The way we share the wine is through a common cup. We no longer allow for intincting (dipping) a piece of bread in the wine because COVID-related scientific studies have shown that dipping transfers germs at a high rate, while sharing in a common cup has virtually no viral transfer. If you wish to avoid this altogether, you can simply receive bread only – this is still participating in full Communion.
Gluten-free wafers will be available as well.
Worship engages all our senses – sight, sound, smell, touch, taste, as well as our minds.
As a church that has a rich worship tradition we believe that this is not an audience/performer moment, but a service where all participate fully.
We also believe that this worship only becomes fully meaningful when it is also purposeful – when we understand it to be preparation for carrying the “Good News About Jesus” (what the word “gospel” means) out into the world and sharing it by example as well as word.
